But some required real-world knowledge: constellations change position depending on the season, what a compass rose looks like, chests full of water sink but chests full of air float, how a hydraulic boiler works, stuff like that. Some were purely puzzles but had really clever figure-it-out steps (like the underground railroad, which most people thought you couldn't figure out without help, silly as that would have been). Sure, most of the puzzles (like the one in the clock tower) were just fairly simple puzzles. Myst is a great example of an adventure game, because each island had one or two puzzles that you needed outside information to figure out. In an adventure game, you have to bring in real-world knowledge to solve (at least some of) the puzzles. In a puzzle game, you're told in-game all the information you need to play the game.
